Rain Water Management
Pop-Up Emitters – Your Rainwater Solution
If you read our information page about backwater valves you will know that some long-used plumbing solutions of old may require modern solutions. Your rainwater discharge is no exception!
Basics of Rainwater Drainage
Many drainage systems run off of an open downspout that catches rainwater from your roof gutters and deposits the water a short distance away from your home’s foundation. Paired with soil that drains well, and proper grading, this solution will still prove viable for many homeowners, however over time the soil around your downspout will erode, and this can cause foundational damage to your home with repeat heavy rainfall, creating costly situations such as basement flooding, and foundation repair.
Pop-up emitters are a modern solution to conventional open downspouts.
What are Pop-Up Emitters and How do they Work?
Pop-up emitters are essentially one-way valves to manage your rainwater runoff. Conventionally, homes have open downspouts that release rainwater a short distance away from your home’s foundation. Pop-up emitters simply give homeowners the option of releasing rainwater runoff a further distance away from their home’s foundation, and dispersing it over a greater surface area.
Pop-up emitters are connected to your existing downspout via a long, often straight drain pipe buried under your lawn. This drain will carry the rainwater from your home’s gutters to the pop-up emitter. When enough water pressure builds in the drain, the pop-up emitter will open and release rainwater from the drain over a large surface area, and well away from your home’s foundation.
In addition to the obvious benefit of discharging rainwater a further distance away from your home’s foundation, installation of pop-up emitters are also cheaper than waterproofing your home. Pop-up emitters are also engineered to only open when pressure has built up in the drain, meaning it is next to impossible for debris to find its way into your drainage system. Furthermore, it’s colouration makes it possible for the emitter to camouflage itself in your lawn. Finally, laying at ground level means it is safe to run lawnmowers and riding mowers over the emitter without causing damage to either your mower or the emitter itself.
